Prevalence and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern of Proteus Species in Clinical Samples

Proteus is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the family of Enterobactericeae. Proteus species are distinguishable from most other genera by their ability to swarm across an agar surface (Jacobsen et al., 2008). Proteus is widespread in the environment and makes up part of the normal flora of the human gastrointestinal tract. Proteus ranks third as the cause of hospital-acquired inf...

The diagnostic value of pleural fluid pH.

One hundred eighty-three patients had simultaneous blood and pleural fluid pH determinations. Thirty-six effusions were transudates, and 147 were exudates. In 46 effusions, the pleural fluid pH was less than 7.30; all 46 were exudates. A pleural fluid pH less than 7.30 was associated with the following six diagnoses: (1) empyema; (2) malignancy; (3) collagen vascular disease; (4) tuberculosis; ...

Empyema Necessitans Complicating Pleural Effusion Associated with Proteus Species Infection: A Diagnostic Dilemma

Background. Empyema necessitans, a rare complication of pleural effusion, could result in significant morbidity and mortality in children. It is characterized by the dissection of pus through the soft tissues and the skin of the chest wall. Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Actinomyces israelii are common causes but Gram negative bacilli could be a rare cause. However, there were challenges in dif...

of large amount of pleural fluid with many polymorphonuclear leukocytes, bacteria and cellular debris. The pleural fluid becomes clottable due to leakage of plasma proteins and loss of fibrinolytic activity in pleural space resulting in the formation of thick layer of fibrin over parietal and visceral pleura. The migration of fibroblasts into pleural space leads to collagen deposition and along...

The patients we reported all required chest tube insertion, either because of respiratory compromise or the size of the pneumothoraxes (large and potentially life-threatening). Since our letter, we have had 18 more cases of pneumothoraxes, for a total of 24 cases of...
